It was so far for this baby to travel to the Clinic that the swelling threatens his life.
The refugee children along the Thai-Burma border suffer greatly from the effects of the war. In many of the villages in western Burma's war zone, the combined child and infant mortality rate is up to 50 percent. Many have complications from diseases that can be treated with proper medical care. Dr. Cynthia and the medics that she trains at the clinic in Mae Sot, Thailand are working hard to assist these children.

During Dr. Ben Brown's first mobile medical expedition with Dr. Cynthia, he treated a young boy with malaria, worms and severe anemia. It was decided that the boy needed a blood transfusion and he was transported to a hospital two days away.

A Vitamin C deficiency has damaged many of this child's teeth. This condition can be easily treated with proper nutrition.
Many of these same problems continue to today, but can and should be easily prevented: for example, de-worming medicine decreases anemia and improves cognitive development; providing drops of Vitamin A can decrease infant mortality; vaccinations can prevent a lifetime of debilitating disease. This is an area where limited resources can go a very long way, vastly improving children's lives.

Next: 4. Dr. Terry Smith
