Dr. Cynthia Maung, with Planet Care's Bob Condon in October 2005.
Dr. Cynthia Maung is often referred to as the Mother Theresa of Burma. She grew up in a woven bamboo house in Burma, eventually becoming a doctor and working in a local private clinic. In 1988, Dr. Cynthia fled from the Burmese military junta, establishing a small clinic in Mae Sot, Thailand. Despite minimal supplies and equipment, she worked tirelessly to provide free treatment for the sick and wounded fleeing Burma's oppressive regime.

Today, Dr. Cynthia's Mae Tao Clinic is a sprawling medical village, treating thousands of patients each year while training a new generation of medics. Dr. Cynthia constantly receives international recognition and awards for her humanitarian work, and in 2004 she was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Dr. Cynthia works not only to provide health care for her people, but to create community. As she so often says:

"You can't improve the health of the people without improving their community."

She works diligently to help restore the health and hope of thousands of refugees who have lost their homes and families in some of the most horrendous conditions on the earth.
