These preschool children pose happily for a visitor.
The Mae Sot School and Orphanage aims to have all its children read and write Karen (a hill tribe dialect), Burmese, English and Thai. In addition to language classes, students learn Mathematics, Science, Geography and History. They also have art classes and handicrafts twice a week, as well as computer, sewing machine and musical training.

As a break from the normal school week, students get to enjoy debates, drawing competitions, poetry competitions, story-telling competitions, and school-wide celebrations on holidays.

On any given day, the Mae Sot School and Orphanage's small compound is filled with the sounds of children laughing, playing, and reciting after their teachers. Their obvious delight and well-being strikes any visitor instantly.
