Paw Ray, a noted community figure, took over as headmistress of Hsa Thoo Lei in the spring of 2005. She soon noticed that some of the day students were receiving pocket money from their families, and that the boarding students, who had no families to support them, were feeling left out. So she started giving her boarding students a few Thai Baht a week -- pennies -- as an allowance. She also set up a school "store" where they could buy small toys and candy without having to venture into town, a sometimes risky journey. This "store" is just bags of goodies, hanging from the rafters of a dormitory building. It's a simple treat for students, but shows how much care is put in to helping them grow up happily even in uncertain times.
